I was five years old when I had my first\u00a0 new snowsuit.\u00a0\u00a0 Mother was a thrifty woman and memories of the depression were\u00a0 strong.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I wore hand-me-downs from my sister Mona.\u00a0\u00a0 But in late August I was so\u00a0 overjoyed\u00a0 to be receiving something new\u00a0 I insisted on wearing my snowsuit.<\/p>\n

It was one piece, a deep forest green in colour, a zippered front and matching hat.\u00a0 Tres chic!<\/p>\n

Finally the snow came.\u00a0 Finally I could wear my new snowsuit. \u00a0 Mother zipped me into it, tied a woolen scarf around my neck and set me out to play.\u00a0 I\u00a0 remember that day clearly.\u00a0 Yes, we had snow but it wasn’t really that cold.\u00a0 I was dressed in woolen underwear, a woolen sweater and then my wool snowsuit.\u00a0 I was unbearably warm.\u00a0 I did what I thought was logical.\u00a0 I started taking my snowsuit off.\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately our mailman saw me , snow suit dragging on the snow behind me,\u00a0 wandering around in the field next to our home.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It ended well with me sitting in front of the wood burning kitchen stove, sipping cocoa.<\/p>\n

MY MOTHER’S OLD FASHIONED HOT COCOA<\/p>\n

For one chilly child or one adult with a really good book to read<\/p>\n

In a small saucepan put a generous cup of milk, a heaping spoonful of cocoa powder, a heaping spoonful of brown sugar or honey, a handful of dark chocolate grated\u00a0 (or use chips), a splash of pure vanilla extract and a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper.\u00a0 Whisk until well combined and bring to a simmer over medium heat.<\/p>\n

Feel free to stir in a few pinches of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, or cardamon.\u00a0 It’s your cocoa.<\/p>\n<\/div>
